Surface Preparation
New plaster:- It is advisable to allow new plastered surfaces to mature for a period of at least six months after the application of a recommended coat of lime wash to ensure thorough drying of plaster. Remove loose particles and paint flakes. Rub with sand paper to ensure that the surface is dry and free from dust, dirt grease etc.
In case of repainting job previous coating of lime wash powder, distemper etc. must be thoroughly scrapped off. The earlier coating of oil based distemper or emulsion based paint need not be removed if in sound condition. However, the gloss or sheen of such coating must be removed using sand paper. Cracked or flaked paints must be removed completely, along with fungus affected areas that need separate treatment. Repair the cracked portion of plaster and areas affected by leaks, drainage etc. well prior of painting. Allow the surface to dry sufficiently.
Application
For repainting, use British Paints Acrylic Cement (Thinnable by Water) Primer as priming coat and for new surfaces, use British Paints Solvent Thinnable primer as priming coat as this will take care of excessive absorption and alkalinity of walls. For best results, fill the dents and smoothen the undulation of wall by applying British Paints Acrylic Wall Putty. Wherever application of Putty is resorted, a coat of British Paints Solvent Thinnable Primer is highly recommended, on the top of Putty as undercoat to eliminate patchy appearance of finish coat.
Tinting of Putty approximately close to the final finish with Xtratone Universal Stainer is recommended for better coverage. Wherever solvent thinnable primer in used, allow it to dry overnight before finishing coat. For protected areas like balcony, porticos, porches, yearnings etc., avoid use of plaster of paris or its admixture to fill dents and imperfections. (The information given herein is given in good faith. Covering capacity is indicated on the basis of results obtained on a prepared smooth surface).
